A month without customer orders does not automatically close an autónomo activity. You may still have subscriptions, outstanding invoices, equipment and administrative obligations. The first question is whether the business remains registered and available to trade, or whether you intend to cease and complete the relevant administrative procedures.

Review your current tax registration and Social Security position separately. Identify which declarations still apply while the activity remains registered, even if a particular period has no sales. Do not infer your obligations from the balance in your bank account or from another freelancer's experience with a different activity.

Continue collecting documents throughout the pause. Distinguish payments of old customer invoices from genuinely new sales, refunds from fresh expenses and personal spending from business costs. Keep a short explanation for recurring costs you retain, such as professional software or storage, and have their business connection assessed on the facts.

Consider a hypothetical illustrator whose main client suspends projects. She keeps her work tools and website because she is seeking replacements. During the quiet period she receives payment for an earlier illustration and cancels a software subscription. Her records preserve the old invoice, the later receipt and the cancellation credit, rather than recording a mysterious new sale and a negative purchase.

If the pause becomes a decision to stop, prepare a closure inventory. Include unpaid invoices, supplier liabilities, assets, pending contracts and any notices. Establish which registrations require changes and which final or later returns may remain necessary. Ending one registration should not be assumed to complete every other procedure.

Avoid abandoning the records as soon as revenue falls. Missing a document during a quiet period can create confusion when work resumes, equipment is sold or a customer pays late. Keep access to your filing history and arrange a simple check of electronic notifications while the business is inactive operationally.

A short status review can separate three matters: what happened commercially, what registrations currently say and what you want to do next. That separation supports a deliberate decision about resuming or ceasing.
