An international inheritance often produces several apparently complete files, each limited to one country. That is where inconsistencies begin: an account is omitted from one inventory, a name is translated differently or advisers use different values. A common factual record gives each professional the same starting information without assuming that every country follows the same rules.

Separate legal and tax questions

EU succession guidance distinguishes civil inheritance matters from taxation. The European succession framework does not itself settle inheritance tax. A conclusion about applicable succession law should therefore not be reused as a conclusion that only one tax authority can be involved.

Give the coordinating professional information about the deceased’s circumstances, any choice of law, the location of assets and existing procedures. Avoid deciding the answer solely from nationality or the location of an apartment. The relevant connections require examination in the actual case.

Agree a shared asset description

For each asset, record its owner, location, identifier, ownership share and source document. Keep valuation evidence and currency information alongside it. Ask advisers to identify differences in purpose rather than forcing every document to display one unexplained figure.

Suppose, hypothetically, that a person who lived in Spain leaves a Spanish home and investments elsewhere, while the heirs live in different countries. One adviser may be asked only to handle the home. That limited assignment should be visible so the family does not mistake a local procedure for a review of the entire inheritance.

Plan the document route

Establish which organisation will receive each document and obtain its requirements. Translation and authentication needs depend on the document and recipient. Ordering every possible certified copy before checking the route can add expense without resolving the real issue.

The practical pack may contain succession instruments, residence information, asset schedules, foreign filings already submitted and powers of attorney. Maintain a record of originals, translations and versions so a later correction can be communicated consistently.

ATC’s inheritance information provides the regional tax starting point; international circumstances may require further examination of competence and applicable rules. Do not assume that a Barcelona asset answers those questions by itself.

The desired outcome is a coordinated map of responsibilities and unresolved matters, not a universal cross-border formula. Tell each adviser about actions already taken abroad and preserve the related receipts.
