An SL's accounting profit is the starting point for a corporate tax calculation, not necessarily the amount taxed. Impuesto sobre Sociedades, commonly abbreviated IS, applies its own rules to that result. A useful calculation therefore includes a documented bridge explaining how the accounting figure becomes the taxable base.
Begin with reliable accounts. Reconcile the trial balance, review outstanding invoices and confirm relevant closing entries. A tax adjustment cannot compensate for missing accounting evidence. If the accounting result changes during the review, update the bridge so it remains connected to the final version of the accounts rather than an earlier spreadsheet.
Identify differences by their cause and expected duration. Some expenses or income have a different tax treatment permanently; other differences concern the period of recognition and may reverse later. Keep a schedule that distinguishes them and records the supporting rule, transaction and calculation. A single unexplained adjustment total is difficult to check in a later year.
A hypothetical equipment supplier recognises an expense in its accounts after a documented review, but the tax treatment requires a separate assessment. The company does not simply multiply its book profit by an assumed rate. It records the relevant adjustment in the bridge and keeps the reasoning with the closing file so the treatment can be followed over time.
Review losses brought forward, deductions and payments on account through their own supporting schedules. These items should not be inserted merely because a prior return displayed a balance. Check availability and applicable conditions for the period being calculated, including any relevant company circumstances or changes.
Ask management to review the explanation in plain language. It should be possible to identify why the taxable amount differs from profit, which differences may affect future years and what remains uncertain. Reconcile the calculated current tax with the accounting entries and preserve the final return and filing receipt alongside the working papers.
The practical benefit is predictability: a business can understand its tax calculation without confusing tax expense, taxable base and cash payment.
