An association's bank account can receive money for very different reasons. Membership fees, voluntary donations, ticket sales and payments for services should be identified separately, even when they fund the same mission. Classification affects internal decisions, supporting documents and tax review. The description supplied by a payment platform or the word contribution on a receipt is not enough to determine the transaction's nature.

Begin with what the payer receives. A member's subscription follows the association's membership rules; a donation may carry a purpose restriction without purchasing a service. An event ticket normally relates to access to an activity. Sponsorship involving publicity requires its own examination. Record the actual arrangement and obtain advice where categories overlap rather than choosing a label because it seems administratively easier.

A hypothetical example involves an association organising an annual neighbourhood film festival. Members pay subscriptions, local residents buy tickets and a business provides funds in exchange for prominent advertising. The treasurer initially records all receipts as donations. Separating them clarifies the event budget, required documents and tax questions without assuming any particular receipt automatically qualifies for donor relief.

Build an event budget that includes venue, equipment, insurance, personnel, refunds and administration. Identify which funds are restricted to the event and which can support the association generally. Approve expenditure and fee decisions through the competent body under the statutes. Track cash and electronic collections with a reconciliation to attendance or other operational evidence, assigning responsibilities so one unexplained total does not replace records.

Keep membership records, fee agreements, donor instructions, ticket data, contracts and invoices organised. Protect personal information and collect only what is needed for the relevant processes. If considering special nonprofit tax treatment or donation certificates, assess eligibility under the national framework separately. Catalan civil rules govern organisational matters within scope; they do not establish every tax consequence of fundraising.

Avoid using membership as an automatic way to reclassify a public paid service, or spending restricted funds on unrelated costs. Review the plan before promotion so that prices, receipts and public claims are consistent with the intended operation. A clear income policy can make volunteer handovers easier.
